Chapter Index

    “Auntie, wipe your tears.”

Shuang Yu had appeared behind Yan Lan at some point and handed her a handkerchief. She looked at him with tear-filled eyes, feeling even more desolate. In the end, the only one who cared about her was the nephew she had always ignored. It was pitiful, and even more laughable. She had turned her life into a joke!

    “Xiao Yu… I’m sorry, I’ve made a fool of myself… Let’s… let’s go eat.”

Yan Lan took the handkerchief and gently wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes, pretending to be calm.

Shuang Yu said nothing, just smiled and nodded, leading her by the hand back to the dining room. She was too upset to eat much. Shuang Yu, on the other hand, ate with great relish.

“Auntie’s cooking is still as delicious as ever. It has the taste of home.”

The words “taste of home” made Yan Lan’s eyes redden again. Because not everyone liked this kind of taste. For example, her husband and her son. Compared to the taste of home, they preferred the taste of money. The food had to look good, the portions had to be small, and the taste wasn’t important. What mattered was whether the ingredients were rare and the price was expensive. They would only look down on this kind of hearty home-cooked meal.

“If you like it, eat more…”

Shuang Yu smiled and nodded, graciously eating two full bowls of rice. After the meal, he was also very thoughtful and helped clear the table.

“Xiao Yu, would you like some tea? I’ll go make some for you…”

“Auntie, don’t trouble yourself. Didn’t I buy you a gift? Open it and see.”

Shuang Yu took Yan Lan’s hand and sat her down, placing the gift on her lap with a smile.

    “You’re so thoughtful, child.”

Yan Lan smiled gratefully, but her heart grew even more desolate. Her relationship with Ji Shuangyu was actually very distant, yet he still gave her gifts. Mianmian, on the other hand, was her own son, but because he despised her for being a Beta, he had never given her a single gift and wouldn’t even let her attend his parent-teacher conferences. If she thought about it any more, she would probably start crying again.

Yan Lan sniffled and quickly redirected her attention, focusing on unwrapping the gift box. The exquisite bow was untied, and she opened the box with anticipation, only to freeze completely when she saw the photos inside.

    “Wh-what is this!”

She spoke with a trembling voice, her eyes filled with disbelief. She hurriedly took the photos out of the box and looked at them one by one. The more she looked, the faster her breathing became, and tears fell from her eyes like broken strings of pearls. Towards the end, her fingers clenched tighter and tighter, until she finally let out a crazed scream, slammed the photos on the ground, and burst into tears.

“Ji Weiheng… Ji Weiheng, how could you do this to me…”

In the photos scattered on the floor, Ji Weiheng was smiling brightly, his eyes full of doting affection as he held a petite but very delicate female Omega. There were pictures of the two of them taking a walk after a meal, and of him taking the Omega on vacation abroad. There were photos of them together in expensive restaurants, and even of him taking the Omega for a prenatal check-up. There were also happy family photos after their child was born. The eternally captured moments made the devastated Yan Lan look even more pathetic.

“This is the mistress your uncle is keeping. You can tell from her figure and appearance that she’s a high-quality Omega. She was a child your uncle sponsored, and they became lovers seven years ago. She was lucky enough to give birth to an Alpha son five years ago. Although he’s just a common Alpha, your uncle is still very happy and satisfied because he finally has an heir.”

Shuang Yu watched the grieving and furious Yan Lan, a faint smile on his face.

“Auntie, have you never thought that the reason your husband doesn’t come home is because he no longer loves you, that he already has another home…”

“Stop it, stop it! I’m begging you, shut up…”

Yan Lan sobbed and grabbed his collar, screaming like a madwoman before breaking down into tears again. Shuang Yu watched her breakdown with a blank expression, continuing to rub salt in her wounds.

“Ah… perhaps I was wrong. It’s not that he no longer loves you, but… he never loved you at all, did he? If you weren’t the accountant at my dad’s company, do you think my uncle would have chosen you?”

He stared at Yan Lan with sharp eyes, a cruel smile on his lips as he spoke, word by word.

Yan Lan’s face changed drastically, her heart filled with shock.

    “Wh-what do you know?! No, I don’t know what you’re talking about…”

“Money makes the world go round. It’s truly amazing. Not only can it buy love and children… it can even buy a person’s life, can’t it?”

Shuang Yu raised an eyebrow, a thin, cold smile flashing in his deep, cat-like eyes. Yan Lan’s face turned pale, and she didn’t even have the courage to meet his gaze. Her heart was in a complete panic. How much did he know, and how much had he found out… What… what should she do…

“Auntie, you’re a smart woman. I believe you understand what I want. You need to know that in the end, the only person who will help you, who will stand by your side without hesitation, is me. Let me give you a piece of advice: don’t cry for someone who isn’t worth it. As the saying goes, find a man who messes up your lipstick, not your hair and makeup from crying. Think about it carefully. I look forward to your call.”

Shuang Yu stood up, gently patted Yan Lan’s shoulder, and left.

Yan Lan’s eyes were filled with complex emotions. She looked at the photos scattered all over the floor, curled up into a ball, and began to sob silently again. She didn’t know how long she cried before she stood up, devastated, and walked to the bathroom. The woman in the mirror had disheveled hair and a haggard face, looking as old as a different person.

    “Ah…”

Yan Lan looked as if she had seen a ghost. She grabbed a rinsing cup and smashed it against the mirror. The mirror shattered into a thousand pieces, just like her broken heart. She squatted on the floor, hugging her knees, crying and laughing at the same time. Marriage had buried her youth. She had worked herself into a frumpy housewife taking care of her husband and child. She had scrimped and saved to help her husband, but in the end, all the money she had saved ended up in his mistress’s pocket.

    “Haha… hahaha…”

Yan Lan’s eyes filled with despair, and a strange laugh escaped her lips. Not a single tear could fall from her vacant eyes. Shuang Yu’s voice suddenly echoed in her mind. Find a man who messes up your lipstick, not your hair and makeup from crying. Did she… still have a chance… to start over?

A flicker of doubt crossed Yan Lan’s eyes. After a long hesitation, she finally sent a message to Shuang Yu.

[What do you want me to do? And what can I get out of it?]

A sexy curve formed on Shuang Yu’s lips when he received the notification.

[Ding, Vicious Ghost’s resentment -10. Current resentment: 50.]

Xiao Ai’s resentment notification sounded in his mind again.

Hailing a cab, Shuang Yu rushed to the airport to pick someone up. A certain Golden Retriever had been sending him messages, acting cute and complaining about how lonely and cold he was with no one to pick him up, right up until the last second before his plane took off.

At 9:30 PM, Shi Heng got off his private jet. He took his suitcase from a guard, told them to split up and hide, and then walked out of the terminal, pretending to be alone. At the arrivals gate, Shuang Yu stood among the bustling crowd, looking down at his phone.

“Yu, Yu, you really came to pick me up!”

Shi Heng’s eyes filled with ecstatic joy, and he sprinted towards him. Watching the big guy running towards him excitedly, Shuang Yu suddenly had a thought.

“I feel like I’m raising a big Golden Retriever!”
